ZUST and Selçuk University Signed Academic Cooperation Protocol, Forging a New Partnership in Education and Research

Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) has signed an Academic Cooperation Protocol with Selçuk University, one of Türkiye’s largest and most internationally engaged public universities. The agreement was concluded during an official visit by the ZUST delegation to Selcuk University’s campus in Konya, and formalises a partnership centred on advancing academic relations and conducting joint studies across a range of disciplines.

The visit was led by ZUST Rector Dr. Mohamud Mohamed Hassan, who was accompanied by a delegation of senior university officials. The delegation was warmly received by Selçuk University Rector Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Yılmaz, and the two parties held substantive discussions on the scope and direction of future collaboration before proceeding to the formal signing ceremony.

A framework for meaningful academic exchange

The cooperation protocol encompasses education, science, and academic exchange, establishing a formal and comprehensive framework through which both universities will work together to deliver tangible outcomes for their respective academic communities. Its scope reflects a shared commitment to internationalisation and knowledge-driven development.

Significance for ZUST and Somali higher education

Selçuk University is among Türkiye’s most prominent public universities, with 23 faculties, approximately 77,000 students, and academic partnerships spanning more than 114 countries. For ZUST, establishing a formal cooperation framework with an institution of this scale and international reach is a significant milestone — one that will provide Somali students and faculty with access to a broader academic ecosystem and a wider range of collaborative opportunities.

The protocol also reinforces the strengthening relationship between Somalia and Türkiye in the field of higher education. This agreement with Selcuk University forms part of a productive series of engagements undertaken during ZUST’s official visit to Türkiye, which has also included the signing of an MoU with Konya Technical University and a high-level meeting with TİKA — the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency. Together, these partnerships reflect a coherent and strategic approach to building international relationships that are purposeful, sustainable, and aligned with Somalia’s broader development goals.

The road ahead

Both universities have expressed a firm commitment to operationalising the protocol's provisions in the near term. Joint coordination mechanisms are expected to be established to oversee the implementation of agreed activities, monitor progress, and ensure that the partnership delivers meaningful and measurable outcomes for both institutions. ZUST looks forward to this new chapter in its international journey with Selcuk University, and remains committed to building the kinds of global academic connections that empower Somali students, advance research, and contribute to the development of higher education in Somalia and beyond.
