In response to the pressing challenges posed by climate change, Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) has launched its annual Biodiversity Campaign, an educational initiative aimed at raising awareness on climate risks, the importance of biodiversity, and sustainable practices to protect the environment. As part of this year’s campaign, ZUST organized a community-driven tree-planting program, successfully planting over 400 trees in public spaces across Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Jowhar, where the university’s campuses are located. This effort underscores ZUST’s commitment to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and resilience in Somalia.

Engaging the Community in Climate Action

The Biodiversity Campaign is designed to educate local communities on the vital role of biodiversity in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human well-being. Through interactive workshops, public lectures, and hands-on activities, ZUST faculty and students work with community members to explore the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the importance of preserving plant and animal species. This year’s campaign included discussions on climate change risks, adaptation strategies, and practical actions individuals can take to protect their environment.

By focusing on plant life, the campaign highlights the essential services that trees and plants provide, such as improving air quality, reducing soil erosion, and combating desertification. These discussions reinforce the value of biodiversity and inspire participants to contribute to conservation efforts within their own communities.

Tree-Planting Initiative: Restoring Green Spaces

A key highlight of this year’s Biodiversity Campaign was the large-scale tree-planting initiative across Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Jowhar. With the active participation of students, faculty, and local residents, ZUST planted over 400 trees in parks, public hospitals, residential areas and schools. The tree-planting initiative serves multiple purposes, including:

  • Reducing Carbon Footprint: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a major contributor to climate change, and release oxygen, which helps improve air quality in urban areas.
  • Creating Green Spaces: These newly planted trees contribute to the creation of green spaces in urban settings, enhancing the aesthetic value of public areas and providing shaded spots for the community to enjoy.
  • Promoting Soil Health and Water Conservation: Trees help prevent soil erosion, retain moisture in the soil, and protect against drought, which is particularly important in arid and semi-arid regions of Somalia.

Educating on Climate Mitigation and Adaptation

Throughout the campaign, ZUST organized educational sessions on climate mitigation and adaptation strategies tailored to the specific environmental challenges faced by Somali communities. These sessions focused on the importance of sustainable land use, water conservation, and community-driven climate action. By empowering local residents with knowledge on how they can contribute to climate resilience, ZUST aims to foster a proactive community ready to address the impacts of climate change.

The campaign also included workshops on early warning systems and disaster preparedness, equipping participants with information to better anticipate and respond to extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, which are becoming more frequent in the region.

Building a Sustainable Future Through Education

Zamzam University’s annual Biodiversity Campaign is a testament to the power of education in driving sustainable change. By engaging local communities, ZUST is not only raising awareness of environmental issues but also inspiring individuals to take action toward a more sustainable future. The campaign aligns with ZUST’s mission to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

Through these initiatives, Zamzam University continues to lead in the effort to address climate challenges, protect biodiversity, and promote environmental responsibility in Somalia. As more trees take root across Mogadishu, Baidoa, and Jowhar, ZUST’s impact grows, symbolizing a shared commitment to a greener, more resilient Somalia.
