Commitment to Meaningful Education on the SDGs for All Students and Staff

Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) is firmly committed to promoting education for sustainable development across all its academic and administrative sectors. Recognizing the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the University integrates sustainability concepts into its teaching, research, community engagement, and staff development programs. ZUST believes that achieving the SDGs begins with awareness, practical learning, and collective action empowering students, staff, and the wider community to contribute meaningfully to the 2030 Agenda.

Institutional Commitment to SDG Education

ZUST adopts a whole-institution approach to sustainability education, ensuring that every member of the university community understands and contributes to the SDGs. The University’s curricula, research agenda, and campus initiatives are intentionally aligned with SDG priorities such as Quality Education (SDG 4), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Climate Action (SDG 13), Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). This integration enables students and staff to link classroom learning with practical sustainability actions that benefit local communities.

SDG Training for Staff – “Care Our Planet, Care Ourselves”

ZUST launched the “Care Our Planet, Care Ourselves” training program for academic and administrative staff to strengthen their understanding of sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the global goals. The program emphasizes the interconnectedness between human well-being and planetary health, encouraging environmentally responsible behavior both on campus and beyond. The training includes workshops on climate change adaptation, sustainable consumption, and mental well-being, fostering a shared culture of sustainability and self-care among staff. Participants develop action plans to incorporate sustainability principles into their work areas and personal routines, reflecting ZUST’s belief that true sustainability begins with individual awareness and institutional accountability.

SDG Workshop for School Teachers – Integrating the SDGs into Classrooms

In line with its national education mission, ZUST conducted a SDG Integration Workshop for Primary and Secondary School Teachers. The one-week workshop brought together educators and school principals to explore how the SDGs can be incorporated into lesson planning, student activities, and classroom dialogue.
The training focused on pedagogical strategies for teaching sustainability, practical classroom exercises for engaging students in global citizenship, and the use of digital tools for SDG-related education. Forty-nine teachers and school leaders participated in the workshop, gaining the skills to make sustainability education more engaging, inclusive, and relevant to Somalia’s local context.

Zero Hunger Initiative at ZUST Campus

ZUST’s Zero Hunger Initiative aligns directly with SDG 2. Zero Hunger by addressing food insecurity among students and promoting sustainable agriculture on campus. The University operates student-managed farms that supply fresh produce to the campus cafeteria while providing hands-on learning opportunities in climate-smart agriculture.
Through the “Harvest for Meal” program, students can participate in farm activities in exchange for nutritious meals, reinforcing values of self-reliance, teamwork, and food sustainability. Surplus produce from the campus farms is donated to vulnerable families in nearby communities, ensuring that the impact extends beyond the university gates.

FAN & FIKIR Initiative – Linking Physical and Mental Well-being with the SDGs

The FAN & FIKIR (Body and Mind) initiative is an innovative ZUST program that combines physical fitness, mental health awareness, and sustainability education. It is based on the understanding that human well-being and planetary health are deeply interconnected.
The program includes weekly fitness sessions, mindfulness activities, and environmental discussions that explore topics such as climate anxiety, sustainable living, and responsible consumption. Students and staff participate together, creating a supportive environment for open dialogue on mental health while reinforcing the idea that caring for oneself and caring for the planet are inseparable aspects of sustainable living.

Cross-Curricular Integration and Research

Each faculty at ZUST contributes to the SDGs through curriculum integration and research. For example, the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Studies incorporates modules on sustainable resource management, the Faculty of Business and Management teaches entrepreneurship for social impact, and the Faculty of Education embeds sustainability teaching methods into its courses.
Research projects coordinated by the Research and Innovation Center (RIC) explore topics such as climate resilience, community livelihoods, renewable energy, and higher education sustainability. These research outcomes are shared through the ZUST Journal of Science and Technology and serve as evidence of the University’s applied contribution to sustainable development.

Community Engagement and Partnerships

ZUST extends its sustainability education beyond the university by collaborating with local schools, NGOs, and government ministries. Through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, TIKA, and the Zamzam Foundation, ZUST organizes outreach programs that raise awareness about the SDGs among youth and community members. These collaborations ensure that sustainability education influences not only university students but also educators, households, and communities across Somalia.

Monitoring and Progress Reporting

Progress on SDG education and engagement is tracked through annual institutional reports, training attendance records, and impact assessments of outreach programs. Data on faculty participation, curriculum alignment, and student involvement are included in the ZUST SDG Progress Report, published annually on the University’s official website under the Sustainability and SDG Impact section.
