From Research to Action: ZUST’s Participation in National SDG Consultations

Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) plays an active role in shaping Somalia’s national and regional strategies for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The University provides technical expertise, research evidence, and policy advice that inform government planning, monitoring, and evaluation frameworks related to the 2030 Agenda.

Partnership with Government Ministries

ZUST is directly engaged in policy development and consultation processes in collaboration with key federal ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education. Through these partnerships, the University contributes to identifying national challenges, modelling future development scenarios, and designing evidence-based strategies that address poverty reduction, education quality, food security, and climate resilience.

Research-Driven Policy Input

University researchers regularly provide data, analytical reports, and technical recommendations that feed into national SDG consultations. ZUST’s faculty experts participate in working groups on topics such as climate-smart agriculture, higher-education financing, and youth employment, ensuring that policies are grounded in reliable research and aligned with local realities. The University also assists ministries in monitoring and reporting on SDG progress, particularly in the areas of education (SDG 4), climate action (SDG 13), and food security (SDG 2).

Enabling Adaptive Management

ZUST’s collaboration with government agencies includes developing frameworks for adaptive management, helping policymakers evaluate the impact of interventions and adjust implementation strategies based on measurable outcomes. This approach supports transparent, data-informed decision-making and strengthens Somalia’s institutional capacity to achieve the SDGs.

Impact

Through its direct participation in SDG policy formulation, consultation, and monitoring, Zamzam University of Science and Technology has positioned itself as a trusted national partner in sustainable development. By linking academic research with government policy, ZUST contributes to Somalia’s collective progress toward achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and exemplifies the spirit of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) in action.
