Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) plays an active role in shaping national and regional policies aimed at eradicating poverty and promoting inclusive development. The university’s expertise is regularly sought by federal ministries and development partners, reflecting ZUST’s reputation as a trusted academic voice in national decision-making and policy formulation. Through research, technical consultation, and professional networks, the university contributes to the design of strategies that strengthen livelihoods, enhance food security, and expand access to technology and innovation.
ZUST experts participated in the Federal consultations for the National Agricultural Extension Policy (NAEP), providing evidence-based recommendations on integrating university-led agricultural training and community-based extension services. Their input focused on improving farmers’ productivity through capacity-building and climate-smart practices that directly support rural incomes and household resilience.
The university also played an important role in the development of Somalia’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, led jointly by the National Communications Authority and UN-ESCWA. ZUST’s contribution emphasised the ethical use of AI and its potential to reduce poverty by improving agricultural efficiency, access to education, and equitable delivery of public services. This engagement demonstrates how the university connects emerging technologies with social inclusion and economic empowerment.
In the National Agricultural Research Policy, ZUST’s researchers advocated for stronger links between academic research and community needs, highlighting the importance of applied science in food production, livestock management, and rural development. The university also supported the formulation of the National Research Agenda (2025–2030) under the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education. Through the Association of Somali Universities, ZUST helped define national research priorities that address poverty, sustainable livelihoods, and education quality.
Beyond its national influence, ZUST engages with local administrations such as Southwest State and Garasbaaley District, collaborating on initiatives that merge climate action with poverty alleviation. These partnerships have produced community training programmes, livelihood support for small entrepreneurs, and environmental-management projects designed to build resilience against drought and food insecurity.
Through these engagements, Zamzam University of Science and Technology has demonstrated that universities are not only centres of learning but also key actors in policy innovation and public-sector reform. By contributing expertise to Somalia’s agricultural, research, and digital strategies, ZUST ensures that national development policies are grounded in evidence, sustainability, and equity. Its continuous participation in policymaking reflects the university’s long-term commitment to ending poverty in all its dimensions and advancing the goals of SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
