Sustainability literacy is a critical component of higher education, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to address global and local challenges. At Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST), a recent assessment examined students’ awareness, engagement, and perception of sustainability, providing valuable insights into how sustainability is understood and integrated into academic and extracurricular activities.
The findings reveal a strong foundation in sustainability awareness, with 71% of students demonstrating familiarity with sustainability concepts and their relevance to Somalia’s development. However, translating this awareness into action remains an area for improvement. While nearly half of the students—48%—have participated in sustainability-related projects, many expressed the need for more structured opportunities to apply their knowledge in practical settings. Community-based initiatives, research projects, and hands-on training programs were highlighted as key areas where engagement could be strengthened.
A significant portion of students—82%—recognized the importance of sustainable agricultural practices in addressing environmental and food security challenges. They emphasized the need for research-driven approaches that integrate modern techniques with local farming traditions. This reflects a growing awareness of the intersection between sustainability and economic resilience, particularly in rural and agricultural communities.
Sustainability topics are already embedded in the curriculum, with 74% of students acknowledging their presence in academic courses. However, many students noted that while theoretical knowledge is widely covered, there is a need for greater emphasis on real-world applications. Field visits, case studies, and interdisciplinary learning approaches were among the suggestions to enhance the impact of sustainability education.
ZUST remains committed to deepening sustainability literacy by expanding research, strengthening community engagement, and refining academic programs to ensure that students not only understand sustainability principles but also have the opportunity to implement them. By fostering a learning environment that bridges theory with practice, the university aims to prepare its graduates to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development efforts both locally and beyond.
