Here at Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST), we are deeply committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In line with this commitment, and as part of our wider social responsibility efforts, we are proud to announce a free health services initiative specifically designed to support Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Mogadishu and Baidoa cities in Somalia.
This impactful initiative, spearheaded by our esteemed Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the ZUST Medical Student Council, is running from December 22nd, 2023, to June 2024. Recognizing the immense challenges faced by displaced communities in accessing proper healthcare, this program aims to bridge the gap and provide much-needed medical services to those who need them most.
Throughout the initiative, our dedicated medical students, under the guidance of our expert faculty members, will be organizing regular medical camps within IDP settlements in both Mogadishu and Baidoa. These camps will offer a variety of essential services, including:
- Comprehensive Health Care: Our medical teams will conduct general health checkups to identify any potential health concerns among IDPs. This will include screenings for common illnesses and awareness campaigns on seasonal outbreaks to ensure preventative measures are taken.
- Treatment and Education: The initiative will provide treatment for prevalent illnesses like respiratory infections, waterborne diseases, and other conditions commonly affecting displaced populations. Additionally, our teams will provide education and guidance on proper sanitation, hygiene, and water management (WASH) practices.
- Medication and Community Collaboration: Essential medications will be distributed to patients free of charge, ensuring they have the necessary resources to manage their health. We understand the importance of working alongside the community. ZUST faculty and students will collaborate with local leaders to ensure our services cater to the specific needs of each settlement. We will also learn from traditional methods and knowledge to provide the most effective care possible.
This initiative goes beyond simply providing medical care. It serves as a powerful testament to ZUST’s core values of social responsibility and community engagement. Our medical students are gaining invaluable experience in providing healthcare in challenging environments, fostering empathy and a commitment to serving those in need.
