Zamzam University of Science and Technology (ZUST) ensures that all members of its campus community students, staff, and visitors have access to nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate meals. The University’s dining facilities operate under guidelines issued by the Catering and Facilities Office in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture and the Health and Nutrition Unit, ensuring food quality, balance, and inclusiveness. Menus are designed to include fresh produce sourced from the University’s demonstration farms, linking academic practice with sustainable food provision. Prices are maintained at a subsidised rate so that healthy meals remain accessible to every student, regardless of financial status. Meal options include a range of dishes vegetarian, vegan, and traditional Somali foods reflecting both sustainability and respect for cultural diversity.
In addition, ZUST promotes healthy eating through:
- Nutrition-awareness campaigns run by the Faculty of Health Sciences, encouraging balanced diets and reduced food waste;
- Weekly “Fresh Farm Day” markets, where students can purchase campus-grown vegetables at low cost; and
- Partnerships with local suppliers who provide organic ingredients and fresh dairy products.
These combined efforts foster an inclusive food environment that supports well-being, affordability, and environmental stewardship translating ZUST’s agricultural expertise into everyday campus practice. The initiative reflects the University’s commitment to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by ensuring that no one in the university community faces food insecurity while promoting lifelong healthy-eating habits.
